Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s Return To The 36 Chambers Re-Released As Wallet Box

September 16, 2011 Leave a comment

Ohh…It’s your old man.

Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s iconic solo debut, Return To The 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version, is being re-released as a one-of-a-kind deluxe box set. The re-issue will be accompanied by a number of rare, limited edition, and value-added goodies, and will be available for purchase on November 22 via burgeoning imprint Get On Down.

The Return To The 36 Chambers: The Dirty Version Wallet Box includes a re-mastered double CD that includes original album as well as remixes, a capellas, instrumentals, and other rarities. In addition, there’s a vintage “On Tour” poster, extended artwork, promotional sticker, detailed liner notes, and an exclusive billfold wallet, where you will be able to put your complimentary laminated Ol’ Dirty Bastard food stamp card. “We all knew that if we were going to do this, we had to include a physical version of that card, there was no other way to do it,” explains Get On Down General Manager, Rob Reilly. “We really wanted the packaging to compliment the creative genius that is Ol’ Dirty Bastard.”

For Get On Down, it was important to make sure that the special edition transcend all types of fans. “The box set,” claims Reilly, “is a collector’s item for people who aren’t even collectors.” Get On Down, the self-proclaimed “music imprint for music nerds by music nerds,” has released and reissued over 50 albums, such as GZA’s Liquid Swords and Muddy Waters’ After The Rain. But crafting this ODB box set holds a special place in their heart. “We firmly believe Dirty was an icon,” says Rob Reilly. “There is truly no way anyone will ever be able to emulate that style of his. The rap game just is not the same without his presence.”

Blu Feat. Chop & Fresh Daily: Part Time Suckas

September 1, 2011 Leave a comment

While the buzz around Blu has continued to grow, one aspect of the L.A. rapper’s artistry has been overlooked: he’s also becoming one of hip-hop’s best up-and-coming producers. Since his early work with producers Exile, Ta’Raach, and Mainframe, Blu has turned to creating his own soundscapes, crafting the entire Her Favorite Colo(u)r project, as well as a handful of standout’s on the recently released Jesus. Now, he’s putting his beats on full display, with the production album Open, to be released on September 27th, 2011 through New World Color / Nature Sounds. Originally posted online as a Blu-produced instrumental set, Open has been transformed into a full-fledged production album. Johnson Barnes and his gang of like-minded MCs laid vocals to every track, making this Open a brand new collection.

Featuring a slew of promising up-and-comers on the mic, Open is a perfect showcase for Blu’s hazy, lo-fi production. Along with two show-stopping appearances from Blu himself, the album features buzzed-about MCs like Fresh Daily, ScienZe, and Sene, as well as newer names like Just Lee and Tribe of Levi. All guests were hand-picked by Blu, so Open also showcases his ear for talent, turning hip-hop fans on to the next generation of rhyme-spitters. But in the tradition of classic production albums like In Control Vol. 1 and Soul Survivor, the main focus here is on the beats, which showcase the distinct sound a talented young beat-maker has been creating.

The Black Sunn & 810: United Division (Album)

August 31, 2011 Leave a comment

Today the young Baltimore hip-hop duo, The Black Sunn & 810, unleash their highly anticipated collaborative debut, United Division.

United Division comes after over a year of hard work in the studio and on the road; the 2 mcs played shows up and down the east coast and midwest, from back bars to the legendary SOB’s, spreading the word about their project, and about their hometown of Baltimore. The 19 track project features viral hits such as “DMV”, featured in the Baltimore City Paper, and “Props” and “I Don’t Care”, both featured on OkayPlayer.com, as well as never-heard-before hard hitting tracks.

“We are trying to show the world Baltimore, not just what you saw on The Wire,” says The Black Sunn, who proudly represents Baltimore in his music, speaking on the tough aspects of growing up in a financially depressed, often overlooked community, without relying on the drug-addled tales shown on TV. “We show the other side, but everything we do, we bring it back to Baltimore.”

Young Scolla: Young Scolla Meets SMKA: Seconds Away (Album)

August 31, 2011 Leave a comment

I’ll happily accept anything new from Young Scolla, a special talent who’s music is crisp and who’s grind is heavily on point. To me the man never really had to prove himself, it was simply a natural yes after that very first click. Hopefully those of you who have yet to mess with Scolla feel the same way after giving “Seconds Away” the good ol’ spin treatment. Now As a fan…I would personally like to see some kill visuals for “Round & Round.” Not anticipating…but who knows maybe some day in the future Scolla will go back and do that for us (drifts off in thought…zoned). Well anyway, enjoy this fresh new project from Young Scolla and SMKA entitled “Young Scolla Meets SMKA: Seconds Away.” #GoodSh*t!
